"context": "On a free day, the halfway point of a typical 20-year-old's sleep falls about two hours later than a 60-year-old's. In the US survey data the average is 04:52 at age 20 versus 03:02 at age 60 (Fischer et al. Table 1). Roenneberg's team found that women peak earlier than men (19.5 vs 20.9 years) and proposed the turning point as a biological marker for the end of adolescence. That interpretation is a hypothesis, but the late-teen peak has been reproduced in several large samples, including Fischer's US analysis, which put the smoothed peak at 18.4 years for women and 19.2 years for men. Both studies are cross-sectional, so they compare different people at different ages rather than following the same people over time. Neither can fully separate biology from lifestyle, such as students' social schedules.",

"method": "Roenneberg and colleagues used the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire, which asks when people fall asleep and wake up on work days and on free days. Chronotype is the midpoint of sleep on free days, corrected for the extra sleep people take to pay back work-week sleep debt (MSFsc). It is a measure of sleep timing, not bedtime. The 2004 sample was an open, self-selected online survey, so its age mix is not representative. Fischer et al. (2017) repeated the analysis on the nationally representative American Time Use Survey, using mid-sleep on weekend diary days (MSFWe, not sleep-debt corrected).",
